Gloria in Excelsis Deo

for Thurs 25.11.2011

At choir on Thurs night, we were, at the conducting by Kerry, practicing Christmas songs. One of which is a medley, taken from Overseas Radio and Tv inc, called Joy to the world/Angels we have heard on high medley--普世欢腾组曲. It starts off with Gloria, then goes onto a spiced up version of joy to the world, then goes into a fancy SATB arrangement of Gloria.

At the super long glooooooooooooooriaaaaaaaa chorus of the song, the sopranos and the basses had the melody, whose tune was straight forward enough. The alto ladies sang a series of descending of scales, the off beat intervals to the melody as an echo, such that the song seemed really busy. The tenor boys, we all agreed, that they had the best part-- which is a really high bit a third interval wise above the sopranos and basses, also a descending of scales. In fact, we were all singing scale decends. Remembering what 唐崇荣 said about the interpretation of joy to the world, the medley's 4 sets of continuous decends with slight pauses from holding the ending note of each set of scales reminded me of descending down lots and lots of flights of stairs continuously, one flight after another, the long pauses being the flat concrete in between each flight of stairs. 想到这里,觉得很感动, cuz this is what my God has done for me, so many descends because it is a very long distance between heaven and earth. The steps that Jacob saw at Bethel.... And angels go up and down those steps that is the Christ....
